She joined in Village Saving and Loaning (VSL) group known as Yarabi Salama in 2016, when TAMWA came up with a WEZA II project after the end of WEZA I project implementation aimed to reduce poverty and improved social justice in Zanzibar.

Ms. Faida Mohammed Shaibu is a 30 year old business woman who joined Women Empowerment in Zanzibar (WEZA II) project in 2016 through her group known as Tusaidiane II based in Mwera, Central district. Initially Ms. Faida was selling crips and some biscuits at Mwera Primary and Secondary school, after joining the group Faida together with her group members started savings and loans activity by saving 3000/= per week in 2017 but by November 2018 the group increased their savings to 10,000/- per week, this money is divided into four portions that is 6000/= for savings, 2000/- community fund, 1000/= for trainings and 1000/= for business.

Ms. Sinajambo Mkonde Makame a tailor

Ms. Sinajambo Mkonde Makame is a tailor by profession aged 43 years old married with three children living in Kajengwa Makunduchi Shehia, Unguja South district. Ms. Sinajambo makes female clothes for both children and adults/women of which she earns Tsh. 500,000/= during the Sikukuu seasons that is; (Eid-el-Hajj and Eid-el-Fitri). In 2016 WEZA II project was introduced in their village/shehia to form Village Savings and Loans (VSL) group where she joined as a member. In her VSL group they were trained by a facilitator hired by TAMWA, Zanzibar on how to make handcraft products like baskets, mats, table mats, wallets and hats made from palm leaves and beads. Ms. Sinajambo chose to specialize in baskets and wallet weaving using palm leaves and beads.

Ms. Fatma Suleiman Mohammed is a 37 old years’ woman. She is a single mother of three children living at Nganani Makunduchi, Southern Unguja, South district. Ms. Fatma joined her Village Savings and Loans (VSL) group called Nafuu Yetu Group when WEZA II was introduced in her village Nganani Makunduchi in 2016.

Ms. Halima Mwadini Makame is a 36 year old married woman living with her husband and three young children in Kajengwa village/shehia. Ms. Halima belongs to an existing Village Savings and Loan (VSL) Group called Maridhiano VSL group where she grows vegetables like green vegetables (Mchicha), green paper, egg plants and red paper on her two acre farm in Kajengwa where she was earning Tzs.150,000/= per month by selling to her community members. During the WEZA II project introduction in 2016, Ms. Halima’s VSL group was selected to join. Her group also got the chance to be capacity built in the already income generating activity they were doing.

Ms. Khadija Mohammed Bakar is a 29 year old married woman living in Cheju village in Unguja Central district a member of Mnyonge Mpeni Village Savings and Loan (VSL) group. Mnyonge Mpeni VSL group is one of the existing groups that were selected during the introduction of Women Empowerment in Zanzibar (WEZA) II project in Zanzibar by TAMWA, Zanzibar founded by Milele Foundation Zanzibar. Ms. Khadija is the chairperson of her Mnyonge Mpeni VSL group made of 15 persons and also the chairperson of Central District Business Committee.

Ms. Semeni is 38 year old single mother with nine children living in Mkataleni Village in Unguja North B district. Ms. Semeni is a small scale farmer who grows cassava, bananas and rice on her farm for home consumption and for sale at the community level earning approximately Tzs.150,000/= per month. In 2026 Women Empowerment in Zanzibar (WEZA II) project got launched in Mkataleni Village in North B district, Zanzibar by Milele Foundation Zanzibar the funders and TAMWA, Zanzibar the implementers. Ms. Semeni together with her community members formed a group for Village Savings and Loan (VSL) introduced by the WEZA II project.

Ms. Nachum Juma Simai is a 34 year old divorced woman with five children ranging from 14 to 4 years old living in Mcheza Shauri Village in North A district, Unguja Zanzibar. Ms. Nachum initial was a tailor sewing children and women clothes making for five dresses per month selling each at Tzs.15,000/= that is Tzs.75,000/= per month making Tzs. 900,000/=. In 2026 Women Empowerment in Zanzibar (WEZA II) project got launched in Mcheza Shauri Village in North A district, Zanzibar by Milele Foundation Zanzibar the funders and TAMWA, Zanzibar the implementers.

Ms. Fatma is a 45 years old woman who joined the new formed Village Savings and Loan (VSL) group called Nyota Njema Group found in Kiungoni Pemba. Ms. Fatma’s Nyota Njema (VSL) Group was formed during the introduction of Women Empowerment in Zanzibar (WEZA II) project by TAMWA, Zanzibar funded by Milele Foundation in Pemba in 2016. WEZA II introduced the VSL scheme methodologies and Income Generating Activities (IGAs) to the community of Kiungoni where then Ms. Fatma’s group was formed.

Ms. Maulid is a 31 years old female entrepreneur who belongs to Nguvu Yetu ni Moja Village Savings and Loan (VSL) Group located in Kiuyu Minungwini Pemba. She is a business woman who is engaged in making handcraft products and carrying out agriculture. Ms. Maulid joined her VSL group in 2008 when Women Empowerment in Zanzibar (WEZA I) was introduced in Pemba by TAMWA funded by CARE International. Ms.Maulid has been saving Tzs.2,500/- per week since the intervention of the VSL methodology in her village. In 2016 with the introduction of WEZA II funded by Milele Foundation, Zanzibar Ms. Maulid’s VSL group got refresher training in both importance of Savings and Loaning and Income Generating Activities (IGAs). After these trainings Ms.Maulid improved on her handcraft work by engaging in making female hands from palm leaves and production of sunflower oil from sunflowers.

The story of Mavungwa

The Tupate Sote Group from Mavungwa Village, Mbuzini Chake Chake Pemba. The group involving 15 VSL women paying the value of share of Tsh.5,000/= each per week equivalent to Tsh.1,000/ per day. The Group has a total saving of Tsh.4,832,000/= accumulated from July 2017 when the second cycle started. Women from this group borrowed all the money from their saving to initiate or expand their individual and group businesses. Almost each group member has established her own private vegetable farm.

Bi. Mwanaharusi is a 43 year’s old married woman with four children from Ndijani Mseweni. Her background to interact with VSL and engage into income generating activities (IGAs) traced back from 2004 when joined to Tizama Lako group under Jonzani Credit Development Organization (JOCDO). From 2005 the group worked with TAMWA Zanzibar under Gender Equality and Women Empowerment Project (GEWEP) where she trained on VSL methodologies, engage into market driven IGAs, business management and entrepreneurship among others.
